Foreign Language Lesson No. 1: Swear Words

When I lived in Bangalore for three years, I found I had to learn Kannada if I had to get around the city. And I also realized that the most useful words to know were swear words. They imply authenticity, they imply that one can speak the language like a native. They are also very useful when arguing with autorickshaw drivers and roadside vendors, when they try to cheat you thinking you are an ignorant tourist.

This Korean teacher seems to have the same ideas. Teaching Korean business to speak English with Americans, he has decided they need to know the swear words as well, for that touch of authenticity. And his slang is quite up-to-date, I didn’t know ‘sick’ was the new word for what my generation called ‘cool’.

About ozymandias

What am I? A body and brain, products of carbon concatenation chemistry, an intelligence and conscience to enable bits of DNA evolve. Maybe a pharaoh, maybe a dung-beetle, never more than a safe conduit for some genes.
