Google launches Google Music India

Google Music is here, a Google property that lets you search (and not surf) a huge host of Hindi film music. True to its tradition, Google has created another facility that’s about searching not browsing (like Google Mail), and working through the internet rather than having to store files on your machine (like Google Docs).

The music is pulled from In.com, Saregama and Saavn (I’de never heard of the third). The sound quality is as it was on those sites. Does this have any potential to affect streaming services like raaga.com and musicindiaonline.com? Maybe, but only if Google Music rapidly adds other Indian languages.

More interesting would be how it plays on GPRS devices like smartphones. These probably hold the biggest potential, since a lot of people listen to music, both recorded and FM radio, through such devices. And right now there’s no advertising, so it remains to be seen how Google will introduce it later.

About ozymandias

What am I? A body and brain, products of carbon concatenation chemistry, an intelligence and conscience to enable bits of DNA evolve. Maybe a pharaoh, maybe a dung-beetle, never more than a safe conduit for some genes.
